air conditioner

Question

ON yom tov, my air cond has a thermostat. Thermostat was set at 72, the room was at 70 (i.e) and the a.c. was not running, can i raise the temp so that is says 75 ( it is a digital reader )? and if it is running and i want it to be cooler, can i lower the temp so that it will stay on longer and cool the house? does it matter if it is a digital thermastat or a dial? thanks ds (and i am not so sure the "email me when R Abadi replies is working, i have yet to receive a response)
