ammonia!

Question

Hello, I just purchased a bottle of ammonia-based window cleaner (generic version of windex). It has a hechsher from a major certifier prominently displayed on the label. I'm sure there are people out there who are so misguidedly strict that they won't even buy window cleaner unless there is a hechsher. But come on--ammonia? Next we will need a hechsher on our gasoline. I also noticed a major hechser on my isopropyl alcohol--no joke-- which like ammonia is poisonous if ingested. Something should be done because it makes kashrut the object of ridicule when people (especially non-observant jews) see certifications on things that obviously don't require it. If the hechsher is being obtained by the manufacturer for reasons other than kashrut--for example because people (of any religion) with certain allergies have become accustomed to looking for a hechser, then maybe the certifier should come up with a new symbol (or a new appended abbreviation like the D or DE that some hechshers use with Dairy) to reflect that. I do understand that having a hechsher helps some people select products more confidently even though they could just as well rely on ingredients and some basic knowledge (which frankly is all I have!). But the whole idea turns sour when I see a hechser on my ammonia cleanser!!
