Question

Rabbi, I noticed that you answered a question concerning kosher in Brazil. My question is the following: Several international companies, including Unilever, Nestle and Warner-Lambert are in Brazil. Can we deem their products to be kosher or not, as it is done in the United States (i.e. not requiring a mashgiach, but relying on their listing of ingredients)? Unilever and Nestle, for example, produces ice-cream without local rabbinical supervision. Perhaps we cannot consider their milk to be reliable, but can one eat non-milk popsicles that they produce? Also, Trident chewing gum in Brazil lists basically the same ingredients as the American one. Once again, there is no mashgiah, but it seems to me that if we can trust Unilevel, Nestle and Warner Lambert in the United States, we can trust them in other parts of the world as well.After all, they have a reputation to uphold, and I cannot think of what non-kosher ingredients they could use to make ice-cream and chewing gum. By the way, Mexico's Jewish community is highly organized, and many of the products sold in Mexican supermarkets contain kosher seals or are listed as being kosher by their VAAD.
