A few years ago I went to an exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art called “Treasures of the Kremlin”. Among the many artifacts and objets d’art from the Imperial Russian court was the streimel of Tsar Peter the Great, complete with a cross on top. It was, of course, the headgear of choice for Russian nobility. A Chasidic couple was viewing the exhibit beside me. The husband remarked to his wife, “You see? They even got the streimel from us!”
