coed gym

Answer
Answered by Aaron Abadiwe dealt with the pants question & we dealt with the gym question. In reality, it all depends on the city and the specific situation. To put a blanket rule is impossible. The only thing that is for sure, is that we can't say that pants is a man's clothing. That would be silly. If the women in an observant community wear pants, it would be more Tzniut than the women that wear skirts to their knees, with their legs showing from their knees to their ankles. A co-ed gym really depends on the gym and the reality of the situation. Some gyms are similar to sleazy bars. Others are more private, classy, and quiet. We are all adults, we understand the concept of Tzniut (modesty), use your judgment. Wearing a skirt at a gym, however, would probably be ridiculous and the furthest from Tzniut. Many of the girls nowadays in the frumest of communities are craving to wear pants. Many wear pants under their skirts just to wear pants. They can tell from their parents & teachers that they don't really know why it is a problem. This causes the kids to rebel. They all tell the kids that it is a man's clothing and that's why it's not allowed. Kids aren't stupid, and they don't buy that. If a Rav where to come out publicly and officially put that rumour to rest, they'll put him to rest. But I can tell you one thing that is very clear. Pants to the ankles are better than skirts to the knees (without pantyhose). ...and please be honest to the children.... AA
