covering cake during kiddush

Question

In the synagogue where we spend Shabbat there is a beautiful kiddush each week. The table is covered with salads, cakes, fruits, fish and vegetable dishes. There is no bread, however and people do not wash after kiddush, only make a mezzonot before heading home for lunch. Is it necessary (or even preferable) to cover the mezzonot foods (cakes, cookies and crackers) until after kiddush is recited over the wine (this would be due to the fact that there is no bread for Hamotzi that would ordinarily be covered)?
