dairy ingredients
Question
In our family we have a family member who is seriously allergic to milk and peanuts. We applauded the new federal labeling law that makes it mandatory for any product which might possibly contain miniscule (ie equipment) traces of either to denote such on the label. Had Stella Doro actually produced cookies which contained dairy derivatives that were NOT on the label, I can imagine that they would be fined and sued into oblivion. Also, if an ingredient change were to happen, I would doubt that the OU mashgiah would happen to catch it in his twice yearly visit to the factory. I learned just how little supervision really means about 10 years ago when I was still naive enough to CALL the hashgachas to ASK if there were any hidden ingredients that were not listed on the label. Whenever I spoke to the Rabbi in charge of a particular plant, he would give me the number of the plant foreman to ask HIM what was in the product.
