Eruv
Question
I notice that you (and many others)are Noheg not to use the Shabbos Eruv on public streets. Does this include a "Carmales"? Could you please cite the strict Halachic reasons for NOT using the Eruv?
Answer
Answered by Aaron AbadiThe Halachah does not permit an "Eiruv String" to replace actual doors & walls in a Reshut Harabim (public street). There is a huge argument amongst the Rishonim as to what is called a Reshut Harabim. One opinion says you need to have 600,000 men walking there, while the others say it is enough if it is 16 Amot wide. The issue is Deoraita and therefore the minimum Psak should be "safek Deoraita Lechumra." In any case, the Shulchan Aruch clearly says Lechumra, that it is not permitted and the Rama probably agrees. What are the Halachic reasons for USING the Eruv? AA
