I can't speak for more that 30 years ago, but yes we did stand over the sink and wash the lettuce for a half hour. I don't know what kind of pesticides they were using then, but the lettuce was always very sandy and buggy and it was always very tedious and time consuming to clean it and yes all the Jewish mothers that I knew growing up spent a good deal of time at the sink "making a salad" which meant washing veggies. Today it seems as though people would just rather skip the greens altogether instead of taking 30-40 minutes to clean it for the family so for those people I am glad that there is Bodek. We also kashered our own meat in those days and I never minded washing the lettuce as long as my mother would soak and salt the meat. I think that both checking veggies and making kosher meat should be required learning for all, we never know if we will always live in a place with Bodek lettuce and self service kosher made meat.
