General kashrut question

Question

When my relative bakes roast she first carmelizes onions in a frying pan & afterward bakes these onions with the meat. I am not sure if the frying pan was previously used for dairy or not and am embarassed to ask. Am I allowed to eat the roast & onion combination? Thanks
