Glatt

Question

There is some inconsistency between CYA and AA's anser re. glatt kosher. So please clarify who is permitted to eat regular kosher and who must eat glatt kosher? Also, please speak to geography, since in certain places glatt is everywhere, but if you happened to be stationed in Montana for a month, all you can get is Hebrew National

We were very clear. I'll paste here a copy of our response of June 2004: ________________________________________ Ok! Let's talk glatt. It is ideal for all 100% Observant Jews to eat only glatt. Non-glatt is still Kosher, but the Poskim say that we should buy glatt. It is a Chumra (extra restriction), but actually more necessary than just a regular Chumra. Many of us are struggling with certain major laws of our religion. We are gradually taking more and more upon ourselves. Especially now that we can get some straight talk on what is required and what is not. Now we often have a woman who is married who does not yet cover her hair (that is certainly a hard one), a man in business who is still struggling with the shaking hands with women thing, or people who are still going to movies that are inapropriate or watching certain garbage on HBO. This represents an overwhelming majority of Observant Jews. These people can certainly eat non-glatt. Hebrew National is a wonderful choice. This does not put anyone into a negative label or status, but just puts forth the priorities that we should have. Our job here is to go up from level to level until we have got the whole package. As long as we're going uphill, we're doing good, and we should pat ourselves on the back. Otherwise, we are automatically going downhill. All those other wonderful people who have all the regular laws under control, they should certainly stick to glatt. Then you have the guy who watches the dirtiest, sleaziest movies on cable, but wouldn't be caught dead with a Hebrew National hot dog. All the King's Therapists can't put this guy together again! I hope that cleared it up. AA
