grama

Question

i was reading through some o the answers and i am confused - i understood from gemara/shulchan aruch [ ie the case of a candle directly behind a door] that grama on shabbos was assur miderabanan - why then do you allow so many things [shabbos clocks trips, others] based on allowing grama lechatchila ? thank you
