Hebrew name

Hello. I would like advice please on how to have a hebrew name. I don't have one and I would like one for many reasons, one of them, if I have a granddaughter, my daughter really wants to name her after me with the only condition that it should be a Hebrew name. My real name's meaning is the flower hyacinth, and when I looked it up in the Hebrew dictionnary it's the word "Yakinton" (phonetic). And the roots of it is Greek, not Hebrew from what I understand. Being Sepharadic and from Turkey, I was named after my grandmother who had a ladino name. I would appreciate any advice, because the time is coming near. Thank you.

Answered by Aaron AbadiThere is no major requirements to getting a name. Pick a name and say from now on this is my new name. I hate to rob you of all the fanfare, but there just is no real procedure. You chose a name and you're done. There is no reason why your Ladino name is a problem. Everyone in the Askenazi community has a Yiddish (German) name. If she doesn't like your name, why change it just to be named after you? In reality, you're being named after your granddaughter. If the name is a name that will get her beat up in school, then just drop it. If other kids have similar names, then why not use it? In any case she'll love you, and this isn't that important. AA
