Hebrew National

Question

It is incorrect that Orthodox Jews ate Hebrew Natonal 15 years ago. Growing up in New Jersey I can attest that no one ate Hebrew National. It always was regarded as questionable. No one knew why it was questionable, but they just kept away from it. As for Shofar hot dogs, everyone ate them. They were under the hashgachah of Rabbi Katz of Passaic. About 15 years ago people stopped eating them (because that was "the thing to do"). Now they are pretty much regarded as non-kosher, by which I mean, no one will serve them because of the sociological reality that people don't eat them any more. Hebrew National might be 100% kosher (and its rav ha-machshir is a very big talmid hakham) but it is sociologically treif! In other words, if you serve it, no one will eat at your house! I don't see how this can be turned around. (By the same token, Kraft marshmallows might be kosher, but if you try seve them, watch people run) It will soon be the case that non-yoshon products will also be regarded as questonable. When everyone is keeping glatt, those people who want to be more pious than the rest have to find something else, and when this becomes mainstream, they have to find another stringency, and it goes on and on.
