Ice Cream

Question

If you are somewhere and you see a home-made ice cream shop and you ask the worker or the owner what they put it in it, and all is good, you can eat the ice cream. But let's say you live in a place with lots of Jews, say Long Island, and there is an ice cream parlor owned by a non-Orthodox Jew. Can you still ask the owner and rely on his answer? I was thinking that probably not, since he knows why you are asking, and he knows what kosher is, and therefore it is not masiah lefi tumo, and even if he puts a non-kosher ingredient in, he has an incentive to lie, since he knows why you are asking. What do you think?

You are correct, except that most ice creams cannot contain anything non-kosher. What can they put in it? Little piglets? Just watch for a cheese flavor or cookie dough or cookie pieces. These have a chance of maybe something, although probably extremely rare. AA
