If one came late to davening

Question

Let's say the scenario is that the minyan is about to begin the Shemone Esre of Arvit, am I supposed to start with them? Or say the preliminary blessings of Shema and try to catch up with them? And if I have started Shema, how do I answer to kaddesh in it? Thank you for your time and expertise, -yehuda
