Question

Kavod HaRav, For the past coupole of days I have been reading your responses on this site. Some things, needless to say, as you already probably know, raise lots of eyebrows. I ussed to go under the assumption of looking at the ingredients, but in my efforts to be a better jew, and after having married someone that used to work in the food industry, and is a Kashrut Natzi (in a good way), we never buy anything without a hechsher even if the ingredients are good. The reason is, that my wife had told me of some of the practices of the food industry and the FDA guidelines. What she told me is, that the food companies do not have to declare ingredients when they are under a certain percentage of the total volume, and when "natural flavors" are listed as ingredients, it can be anything from carrot juice to beef broth reduction (often used to flavor rise dishes, which is what I was refering to in a previous post) to bug juice (there is a particular bug that a red food color is derived from). I have no reason not to trust my wife unless in the last 2 yesrs the FDA regulations have changed. Thanks.
