Kashrut Standards

Question

A number of people in my shul have been commenting on your Pesah list. Someone even printed it out and was passing it out on Shabbat. The rabbi, who was familiar with the website, made some comments about it, and I am curious to hear your response. While he agrees with you that it is nonsense to put hekhsherim on candles and water, and orange juice, he also said that he disagreed with other things you have said. He said that the standards you are advocating, although they are found in the Shulhan Arukh, are "1950's standards" and are not up to what the Orthodox community expects today. He explained that although the Shulhan Arukh permits many things, some of these are only leniencies which were suitable in earlier periods, but are really only be-diavad. Today, when we can have hekhsherim which visit the plant and ensure that all the equipment at the company is kashered for Pesah (as well as when the hekhsher first assumes supervision at the company) this is a standard to strive for, even if not required by strict halakhah. He said that this was R. Moshe Feinstein's opinion. He also pointed out that Ashkenazim in this country generally do not eat gelatin, which you have listed as acceptable for all.
