Lulav on Shabbat

Question

If someone forgot it was Shabbat and started carrying the lulav and etrog to shul, and remembered while on the way, is he permitted to carry the lulav to shul or bring it home? (It happened this year)

It is the same as a regular case of someone carrying anything else. CYA
