Mail on Shabbat

Question

Does your father have a teshuvah about opening mail on Shabbat? This strikes me as a controversial ruling since the Mishnah Berurah in siman 340 is pretty adamant against opening up any letters, and he doesn't even bring any sources that permit it.

If you looked into it thoroughly, you'll see that if you can open a bottle of soda or a can of beer, you can also open anything else. It's either all or nothing. Contrary to the popular belief, Rav Aaron Kotler (sr.) permitted it. My father was his student, heard it from him personally, and agrees with that opinion. It's OK to be controversial, but in this case it really is not, because most people open something.... and if you can open one type of thing, you can open anything. AA
