Minhag Status

Question

My father A'H was from Morocco, where the custom was not to eat rice on Pesah. Am I mehuyav to maintain this (ie.,minhag avotenu beyadenu,etc.) or was this really a practical matter that no longer applies, and may be safely abandoned? Would hatara be required? Thanks for your hard work and your refreshingly honest hashkafa.
