Oven on Shabbat
Question
I think maybe I didn't post this question, if I did , sorry for the repeat. My oven has a digital timer that I can set to stay on. When it goes off, it turns the oven off but beeps until I physically turn the knob to off ( there are knobs to set the temp., not digital). Am I allowed to turn it off to stop the beeping? If I go into labor on Yom tov (not shabbat) can Chaim drive me to the hospital, pay the toll and park the car etc.? On Shabbat I know I have to take a cab but, when I need to call my doctor, do I have to use the phone with a shinuy or just call regular? Thanks, Tammi

Answered by Aaron AbadiYou did post it & we were backed up. I did happen to get to it yesterday, and I already received a response from my dad 3AM EST. 1) No problem. (Fahr Vus Nisht?!) 2) Yom Tov, no problem. Shabbat is OK technically in an emergency, however it is too complicated, so if you can arrange beforehand for a txi, that's the best. If you didn't, or if it were earlier than expected, just hop in the car and go. But on Shabbat when you get there, just leave the car running and hope one of the non-Jews there will park it for you. Don't worry about the opening and closing of doors, that light is not much of a deal. Now, calling on the telephone is maybe a Derabanan. Don't worry about it on Shabbat, just call straight, as if it were a Tuesday. Wait on hold, Call again with stupid questions. This is a serious time, and technically you can do even De'Oraitas, but we are somewhat careful to do as much beforehand as possible. But telephone is not that much of a deal (in this type situation). Keep us posted! I'm reminded of when our twin girls were being born. All the Bubbies & Zaides had many names to go around. We were "only" having two, so we couldn't accomodate everyone. We named them Michal & Shira without accomodating anyone. But I did get everyone scared for a bit. I told them that since the Sephardi Minhag (custom) is to name the same name of the living, and rather it is an honor and even a responsibility to name the same name as your own parents, we decided to name the two little girls after my mother and my wife's mother. Their names would thus be Riszie & Ratzia! (we were just joking, but got them scared nonetheless) AA
