Pluralism within parameters of Mesorah

Dear Rav Abadi, Thank you again for your work in maintaining this website. As a regular reader of this website I am reminded of the Gemara in Chagiga daf gimel, which states, to paraphrase, that when one is confronted by conflicting opinions in Torah/Halacha one should open their ears wide to collect the various opinions, and then consider them carefully and bear in mind that they ultimately all trace back to one source at Mount Sinai. This might be the key to fixing much of what is wrong in Orthodox society - let us all be willing to give consideration and respect to another opinion, and understand that "elu v'elu divray Elokim Chaim". This was certainly the approach of Bais Hillel, who always placed the words of Bais Shammai first. I also think that this is why, in the story of "Tannur Shel Achnai", R' Eliezer was placed into Cheirem - he wanted to prove that only he could be right, that H-Shem was on his side, and there was no room for dispute or dissent. This is not the proper approach to a Machloket, so they placed him in Cheirem in order "shelo yirbu Machloket B'Yisroel" - that Machloket, meaning the kinds where people do not honor the others' opinion, should not multiply. At the end of the story Eliyahu HaNavi describes H-Shem as laughing (kehaveyachol) that He was bested by the other side - so even H-Shem is willing to "concede" to another opinion in Halacha!! I personally do not know enough to decide whether R' Abadi is correct or R' Elyashiv is correct about the Sifrei Torah, but I am willing to hear and respect both opinions, and I respect those who follow either way, because I trust that both opinions are rooted in an honest interpretation of Halacha. The only thing to discuss are the rational merits of the respective Halachic arguments and interpretations, not politics, innuendoes, insults, hatreds, or knee-jerk reactions. I apologize for using your site as my soapbox, but I feel that this is an important issue for our society today.
