Can you explain to me the meaning of Poke Chazee mai amah Debar means? When is it used and when is it not used? Why is it effective in establishing halacha? Can it be used in modern times? If so, why are oats not considered hametz? Thank you?

Answered by Aaron AbadiThe translation of those words used often in the Talmud means literally, "go out and see what the people do." In the times where a majority of people are worshipping the sun, can we use this reasoning to join them? This is used specifically in a Jewish Law that was disputed by our great Rabbis and there was never a decision. Then we say go out and see.... If the overwhelming majority follow one side of the dispute, then clearly we can assume that the Rabbis of previous generations determined the Halacha in that way. Otherwise, why is everyone following that one side. AA
