Prayers for the sick

Question

I understand that if someone is clearly at the end of a terminal disease and it is clear that it is only a matter of "when" not "if" that one shouldn' t pray for a refuah, but can one pray that the Choleh not be in any more pain? Can one pray for someone to die that is in a lot of pain due to a ternimal disease?

Yes & Yes. The maid of Rabbi Yehuda Hanasie AKA Rebbi was praying for him to remain alive, but when she realized the pain he was in, she prayed for him to die, and he did. It's in the Gemara. AA
