RE: NYC Water

Question

My understanding is that these "copods" are found in all rivers and creeks, not only NYC water. I want to let your father know that I have lived in NYC for more than 30 years and I have never seen a "copod". The same situation must have existed in Europe and and no one ever questioned drinking water from the rivers and streams. It seems to me that in the same way that honey and milk are permitted on the basis of the pasuk "ERETZ ZAVAT CHALAV U'DVASH", cannot the Pasuk, "ERETZ NACHLEI MAYIM" be read to permit the drinking of water from creeks and rivers? I realize that we don't darshen from Pesukim anymore, but no one has ever thought of making water treif before either. For all these reasons , known in law as public policy, can we not rely on the poskim who agree that these items are too small to be halachically significant? Could it be that even the machmirim, if they were faced with such a tiny item would be permissable even for them. Just my opinion, but pass it on for what it's worth. Most important is the fact that I have never seen a copepod. DW
