reading ny times on shabbos

Question

In a previous post the answer to the question of reading a newspaper on shabbos was that its assur except in the bathroom. The reason given is that you cant learn torah in the bathroom. But I thought the reason its assur to read a newspaper is because of the advertisements, its akin to mekach umemcher.

Catalogs and current business related items are, of course, not permitted. Reading the news was what was being discussed there. AA
