Sets of dishes

I do not want to come across Chutzpadik, like some people do on this website or ignorant, however I do have a question I hoped you could clarify. If we do not have to kasher our dishes(i.e. plastic, corel, etc.) for Pesach is it really necessary to have 2 sets of dishes during the year for meat and dairy? And, is it necessary to change or to have special dishes for Pesach?
