Shabbat help

Maaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnn!!!!! Doesn't anyone do ANYTHING without getting paid anymore????? I spent my entire teenage Shabbat life helping out the lady across the street with her twins. My daughters have spent their entire teenage Shabbat lives helping out mothers with young children (and me!). I would NEVER allow them to be paid for helping a neighbour any day of the week and most certainly not ever on Shabbat. My daughters always help out anyone who comes to the synagogue and anyone they know who could use it. They help mothers with young children, people who are caring for the elderly, they help to serve the kiddush and the seudah shlishit and to clean up too!! It is their pleasure. Afterall we all get plenty of opportunities to earn money during our lives, but how many mitzvot do we get to gather up? What's the REAL currency folks?? Isn't anyone in your neighbourhood raising their nice Jewish teenage or preteen girls to do chesed for another Jew? Have things changed so much in the Jewish world that young people are not being brought up to do chesed, they only want to be paid and on Shabbat no less??? Where do you live? Do you live near me? I'll send you a nice hyper energetic teenager for Shabbat afternoon. Yeah, they'll be helping you out, but really YOU will be the one who is helping them. There is no substitute for the self esteem that comes from doing chesed and we all know that every young person could use a nice healthy dose of self esteem. Maybe you could ask your Rabbi if there are any young ladies in the neighbourhood who are looking for the opportunity to do some chesed while you go to the shiur. I would hope that your Rabbi would also jump at the opportunity to help both you and a young person!!!
