sponge on shabbos

Is it permissible to use a sponge to wash dishes on shabbos if one is careful not to squeeze?

I think, that is a type of an oxymoron. Would you use a hammer to rub a nail or bang it. If you are not squeezing it , why you using it. We have said in the past, that a sponge can be used to soak up spills, because you don't want to use what comes out of it. Please don't confuse the two. CYA
