tearing words on Shabbat

Dear Rav, What is the source, please, of permission to tear printed words to get to food on Shabbat? I do it and everyone yells at me!! I know there is a NodehB` Yehudah that permits it, but is he alone? And secondly, can one tear open( and therefore the words) a Splenda packet, for example, when there is already another poison, like Sweet and Low, already opened? Thanks for all, Martin

My father has a Teshuva about it in Orach Chaim #190 - It is not a short Teshuva, but it is explained very clearly. If you only want Splenda then yes. If you have no preference, why... CYA
