Tefillin

Question

Kavod Harav: I sometimes run out of tefillin strap by the hand and can only wrap the last "wrapping" once. Is there any requirement for the binding on the hand or is it merely a minhag? As such, what if one can only wind around the middle finger 3 times but not quite make it around the hand at the end? Todah Rabah, Yakov
