Question

Our small minyan does not have a kavua person to read the Torah on Shabbat - there are two or three volunteers who switch off. Someone proposed the following: There is a neighborhood kid (about 17) who reads beautifully, and is willing to do the job for a small amount of money. However, there is a definite chashash as to some of his actions, especially about whether he is fully Shomer Shabbat. I understand he also has a girlfriend (but I'm sure this is pretty innocent). The congregant pushing this idea said that he has told the kid that if he wants the job, he has to come to shul on time, keep Shabbat fully (the family itself is shomer Shabbat) and "stop hanging around with the wrong people." The kid has agreed. Should we make him our permanent ba'al koreh with the idea that we are being mekarev him as well as getting a good reader? Thanks in advance for your help.
