Question

If someone does a minhag like upsherins is it a halachik issue that they me doing an avera? or its just like doing nothing? i mean nothing really happens to the kid if you grow his hair long. we don't believe in magic. i just don't want to do an avera to keep my family minhag. or make a shalom bais issue if its nothing?
