boys and girls

I would like to know if there is an actual issur of boys and girls hanging out together? What is the issur if there is one (sources please) Also, is there such thing as being "shomer" as in nigiah or is it an actual issur too? Are guys allowed to listen to girls singing on tapes? If it is not dating for real purposes, then it is a problem. It's like being "Shomer" Shabbos. Yes, if they don't specifically know the person. AA
