Correcting the Baal Koreh
Question
Shalom Rabbi, I wanted to ask if when the Baal Koreh makes a mistake that does not change the meaning of the word, should the congregation correct him, it might be embarrassing for him. Also even if it does change the meaning of the word, isn't embarrassing a deorayta which overrides kriyat hatorah which is a derabanan? Should the tzibur remain silent in a case where the Baal Koreh makes a mistake a)changes the meaning of the word b)doesn't change the meaning of the word Thank you
Answer
Answered by Aaron AbadiThe Shul is responsible to get a Baal Koreh that knows how to read. Yelling at the Baal Koreh every few minutes is not an option. If the Baal Koreh was not prepared properly for whatever reason, let him ask a friend to stand near him and correct him as needed. Your concerns are valid. AA
