Edible

Question

I would truly appreciate definitions of "edible" and "inedible." I understand that a food coloring is "inedible" because I wouldn't drink of a cup of it on its own....but I would also not eat a stick of butter or a bowl of chicken fat. A basic guideline would be very helpful to me. Thank you for your time.
