Emeril's Pasta Sauce
Question
B&G Foods of Roseland, NJ (bgfoods.com) produces a line of pasta sauces under the Emeril’s brand name. The ingredients are kosher. I called the company and asked if they produce sauces containing meat, on the same equipment. They do produce meat sauces and sterilize the equipment with hot water between runs. The representative did not know the sterilization temperature. They do not wait 24 hours before sterilizing. Questions: 1. Since the equipment is ben yomo, halacha requires shishim against the kli, which we generally do not have. Is the sterilization nevertheless considered capable of removing all taam issur? 2. Even if sterilization doesn’t remove all taam issur, are the quantities of kosher sauce mevatel whatever taam issur remains? 3. Are the “kosher” sauces produced at B&G Foods, kosher?
