Europe
Question
I was reading through some old posts and came across one that said that people in Europe had more emuna and served hashem better or something to that effect... i would just like to strongly dispute that as from what i understand there were manymore jews in europe who were "off the derech" (communists, socialists, and just a lot of other people). The yeshivos then, although on a very high level in learning, perhaps even higher than many yeshivos today, were very very small. The famous yeshivas of radin and mir etc were very small. there are many more religious jews in america and people who like to romanticize and say how much better it was in those days really should check into it a little better. Most honest grandparents who lived in those days will tell you this (as mine did). chinuch was diff in those days, boys hated learning more than they do today..... There were definitely very good people who lived then and europe produced some very big gedolim who were on a higher level than gedolim today. However there were more regular people who were not to frum. The same to the yidish language my grandparents always said it is just a language maybe there were holy people who spoke it but lerning is more important and to concentrate on the yidish and forget the "ikur" is very wrong. Just venting.... it bothers me when so many people are just doing or saying things that seem so obviously not important enough
