Gevinat Akum
Question
Why should Gevinat Akum be any differet than Halab Akum? With milk we say that "Halab Hacompanies" (Language of R. Moshe Feinstien) is ok in this country, so why can't we say the same for Gevinat Hacompanies which are made with vegetable or microbial rennet? We have no idea who owns the companies, nor do we care. We only need look at the federal and state laws. You seem to hold that way regarding where to by chames after Pesah, which is also a gezerat hachamim, as is the cheese issue. Also, regarding cream cheese. As I understood it the halacha speaks about "even cheese from a goy made with vegetable rennet is assur." Cream cheese and cottage cheese do not use any kind of rennet. Do you interpret the halacha as anything that is Ma'amid? If so, based on what? I wish to thank you VERY much for the time and effort you put into this site. You have made my job infinitely easier, and I now get much fewer accusations of "making up my own laws." Hazak U'Baruch. Wishing you and yours a Hag Kasher Vesameyah. My best to your father, when you speak to him. Sincerely, Fred E. Dweck Los Angeles, CA
