Kashrut
Question
I was speaking to a local rav (a big talmid chacham) and I told him about Rav Abadi's approach to Kashrut, how all that is necessary is the ingredients, and he told me that this is what R. Chaim Zimmerman, the gaon of Chicago held and that when he was young, this was all that mattered, but that today, if a rav were to say this, he would be destroyed. So my question is 1. Did Rav Abadi speak about this when he was posek in Lakewood? 2. Why isn't he afraid of being attacked -- is it because of lo taguru? 3. For those of us who are not talmide chachamim, what should we do? If I let people in my shul know that I eat certain foods that don't have a hashgachah on them, they won't eat with me anymore, and might even regard me as less than frum. On the other hand, I too want to speak the truth and tell them that there is nothing wrong with Wrigley's gum and canned vegetables? Any suggestions? 4. Finally, when I have guests over my house, should I only serve things that have hashgachot on them, or just like I don't check their closet to see what they have, since I trust them, if they come to my house the same assumption should hold (even though they would be shocked if they saw that I didn't have hashgachot on my canned veggies and would refuse to eat them if they knew).
