Mixed seating at non-religous events

Question

My daughter's Orthodox elementary school had an indoor seuda to celebrate the beginning of the school year for the girls and their families. The event did not have a mechitza to separate the men from the women. A friend of mine said not having a mechitza at the event runs contrary to halacha. My question is, is a mechitza required at 'non-religious' events?
