onions

Question

I have been told by a family member that if you cut up an onion, you are not permitted to leave the part with the root in your home overnight, but must throw it out right away. Is this the correct halacha?

Never heard of that one.... There are bugs on the head of an onion. If you leave the head on the counter next to the rest of the onion, you can often watch the bugs running across the counter. AA
