Question
Dear Rabbi, I was surprised that you advised a student who noticed a grading error not to report that error to the teacher. While Halacha is a dry set of laws, we know that a person can be a "Naval Breshut HaTorah". I take that to mean that following the law is not all that Hashem wants us to do. He wants us to choose a path far from dishonesty and close to goodness. We should want to accomplish Kiddush Hashem. Even if Halacha rules that we are not required to notify a teacher of mistake - I would think that a honest and moral person should choose to do so. If my 1st grader son asked me what to do I would have a hard time explaining why one needs to notify a shopkeeper of their mistake but not a teacher. I would instruct him as has been the custom of my family for generations - always choose the honest path. Thanks, sammy
