Rock on Shabbat

Question

Is there any problem with using a rock as a paper weight on Shabbat? I know that rocks are muktzeh, but lets say you pick up the rock to use it? Then it has a purpose, so why should it be muktzeh?

If you use it before Shabbat for something, then you can use it on shabbat. CYA
