Unusual plates

Question

A friend of mine was talking about a dish he makes which involves tapioca pearls, and he mentioned that he uses a set of dessert plates for them that are basically polished clam shells. If they're being sold as plates, they have to have been cleared of all the edible bits. Obviously the clams themselves aren't kosher, but is it okay to use the shells as plates?
