utensils used for cooking on shabbat

Question

my roommate (he is Jewish) uses various utensils to cook on shabbat (eg, sandwich maker). are these utensils now not kosher? do they require kashering? Is there a difference in which utensils are used? (eg, silverware vs. microwave etc)
