What exactly is Glatt koher?

honorable Rabbis, I read on your sight recently that Hebrew National hot dogs were kosher, but not glatt kosher. Could you tell me what exactly is glatt kosher and who should eat only glatt kosher? I appreciate any insight into this. Thank you.

Answered by Aaron AbadiWhen an animal is slaughtered, the Shochet checks the lungs for any holes. The regular Kosher is not checked as thoroughly as Glatt. For the title Glatt, it needs to be clear of blemishes on the lungs. Blemishes can reflect a possible puncture of the lung which will render the animal Treif (non-Kosher). If the meat is brought to you already without this extra checking, it is Kosher. But people who are strict in everything required, should certainly stick to Glatt. The many of us who are on our way up, but still have certain laws not being kept, should concentrate on those laws and not worry about Glatt. AA
