kosher food cooked by a non religious jew
Question
I appologize for asking for more clarification and detail on a topic that you have so kindly already answered. I'm just learning and I'm excited to find that I can eat in my mother's house, but I'm concerned that I may be missing essential elements. Your answer was basicly, if the ingredients are kosher, I'm ok. Is there an issue if she cooked treif (or halav) in the oven a few hours before she cooked my kosher meat. How about her plates and silverware? If these aren't problems, can you site the sources so I can put my wife's mind at ease? Thank you so much for your great efforts.
Answer
Answered by Aaron AbadiAs long as the oven is relatively clean, and you are not cooking directly on the oven, it is OK. Her pots and pans are your only issue. If you know that she uses it for Treif, Lechatchilah (Initially) you should put a little water in the pot & Kasher it by bringing it to a boil with any cover & letting it steam up. You don't need to worry about maybe she cooked treif today. You can use this trick anywhere and in less than 2 minutes, you can Kasher any pot. It is ideal to then rinse it in cold water. If you did not do this, the food is still Kosher. If she already cooked something Kosher in it & you know it's Kosher, you can eat it. You don't need to Kasher the silverware, since it is usually used as a Keli Sheni. AA
